Common Stretch Mark Causes

Stretch marks are a type of scarring. They occur in the dermis, the middle layer of the skin. This elastic layer allows your skin to retain its shape.
However, when the dermis is constantly being stretched, it will eventually break down leaving stretch marks. Initially, they look like purple or dark red lines, but eventually fade to a silver or white color.
Let’s examine some of the reasons stretch marks might develop.
Weight gain and growth spurts are two of the most common stretch mark causes. This usually happens to young teenagers during puberty. It happens when the tissue under the skin is pulled by rapid growth or stretching. In fact 90% of women get stretch marks and 70% get them during adolescence. Young men sometimes develop stretch marks from body altering sports like body building or by using steroids.
Pregnancy is another main cause o f stretch marks, as it can cause hormone levels to fluctuate. These hormones can alter the skin’s protein balance, making skin thinner, therefore increasing the likelihood of stretch marks. Whether they crop up, and how severe they are, is usually dependant on the elasticity of the skin and how fast the weight gain occurs. In all, 90% of women get stretch marks during pregnancy.
Crushing’s Syndrome is something that a lot of people are not aware causes stretch marks. This is when your body produces a high level of a hormone called cortisol for a long period of time, causing you to gain weight quickly. However, like pregnancy, this is due to rapid weight gain.
Stretch marks can occur anywhere, however the areas that store fat tend to be more prone. These areas include the stomach, breasts, “love handles”, buttocks, and the back of the arms.
Although stretch marks are very unpleasant to look at for some people, there are different treatments available.
